This briefing examines: participation in post-school study; pathways through higher education; pathways through non-apprenticeship vocational education and training (VET); and pathways through New Apprenticeships. Findings include: 80 per cent of young people have undertaken some form of post-school study by age 20; more than 75 per cent of young people have completed or are continuing in the course of study commenced after school; those that change courses do so within the first year; young people who are working are more likely than those not working to withdraw from post-school study; and young people tend to stop post-school study because the course was not what they had expected or because personal interests had changed. The transition from school to work and adulthood is getting longer as post-Year 12 education becomes the norm. While the transition process may have become more complex, the traditional markers of a successful transition remain the same and achieving the transition to adulthood is not straightforward. This briefing paper defines a successful youth transition based on previous research and considers a range of factors that affect transitions. A number of interventions which can help young people make a successful youth transition are also discussed. Show less

LSAY briefing, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is a series which aims to provide summaries of findings from ACER research and to identify some of the implications for policy and further research. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue, which focuses on the labour force experiences of secondary school students in Australia, highlights that: students who undertake short work experience programs benefit in terms of learning skills appropriate to a particular job; work placement programs encourage some students to complete their schooling; part-time jobs are perceived as being useful for developing general employment skills; part-time jobs of less than 10 hours a week do not affect academic performance of Years 11 and 12 students; and students with part-time jobs are less likely to be unemployed at age 19 than those who did not work part-time while at secondary school. This briefing describes the post-school education, training and labour market activities of young people in Australia between 1996 to 2000 and identifies factors that affect their chances of getting full-time employment or not becoming unemployed. It is based on the findings of two LSAY research reports: ‘School leavers in Australia: profiles and pathways’ and ‘Dynamics of the Australian youth labour market: the 1975 cohort, 1996-2000. Highlights include: the early career and labour markets of Australian youth are largely positive; less than 10 per cent of young people remain outside full-time education and training or full-time work over a sustained period of time; completing an apprenticeship lowers the risk of unemployment for those who leave school without completing Year 12; and part-time work can be a stepping-stone into full-time employment. LSAY briefing, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is a series which aims to provide summaries of findings from ACER research and to identify some of the implications for policy and further research. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue, which examines the main pathways by which Australian youth move from school to work, highlights that: the school-to-work pathways in Australia are highly diverse and individualised; by the mid-1990s, 43% of Year 10 students from the late 1980s had obtained either a university degree or a TAFE diploma or were studying for one of these qualifications; tertiary qualifications had considerable influence in maintaining full-time employment; the majority of school leavers without tertiary qualifications spend most of their first seven post-school years in full-time work; about 16% of male Year 10 students and 20% of female students had problematic pathways; young people whose main after school activity in the first year was either an apprenticeship, full-time employment or full-time study were more likely to experience successful pathways.
This brief is based on a paper presented at the Australian Centre conference in Potsdam, Germany in May 2000, which was organised by the Monash University-ACER Centre for the Economics of Education and Training (CEET). These two reports use data obtained from young people who were in Year 9 at school in 1995 and whose educational and occupational activities were traced each year thereafter. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue examines findings on participation in VET in schools programs, pathways that are associated with these programs, and how students who do not complete Year 12 can be helped by vocational education and training (VET) courses beyond school. The highlights include: VET in schools programs provide greater choice and opportunities to meet the diverse needs and interests of students; VET in schools subjects were undertaken by approximately one quarter of those students who completed Year 12; VET in schools programs have value for all students in preparing them for the transition from school to workplace or further education and training; VET programs play an important and growing role in providing pathways for young people who do not complete Year 12; and young people in areas of high unemployment and those who are least job ready in terms of educational attainment are least likely to participate in VET. This Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) briefing draws on research which investigates the long term outcomes of four groups of young people (those born in 1961, 1965, 1970 and 1975) as well as another sample of young people aged 19 years in 1994 and 1995 to look at labour market experiences, including employment and earning patterns, of Australia's young people. The briefing highlights that: (i) school achievement in literacy and numeracy improves employment and earnings; (ii) the gender gap in earnings is declining; (iii) apprenticeships bring initial advantages which decline over time; (iv) increases in the national unemployment rate relate to decreases in hourly earnings; (v) having a degree is one of the main positive influences on earnings; and (vi) year 12 completion decreases the chances of unemployment. Taking a break between high school and university is becoming increasingly popular for Australian students. Many use this time to work, undertake other study, travel and have a rest from formal learning. This paper discusses how a ‘gap-taker’ can be defined, noting that gap-taking is not the same as deferral. Using Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) data, the paper goes on to quantify the extent of gap-taking and examines the characteristics of gap-takers and non-gap takers. The final part of the paper compares the study and employment outcomes of gap-takers and those who do not take a gap year. Show less
